ChatGPT does not officially report its monthly active user base but as per Resourcera’s estimates, the chatbot has around 1 billion monthly active users as of 2026, that’s 100 million more users than its weekly active users count.

With over 1.3 billion active AI users globally, around 76% of them use ChatGPT at least once a month.

ChatGPT lost 4 million users in March 2026

Over 4 million people globally have pledged to boycott ChatGPT in March 2026, a mass user exit caused by CEO Sam Altman agreeing to let the US Department of Defense deploy its AI models on a classified government network. The backlash was swift and organized, tracked publicly through a dedicated boycott website.

The Pentagon deal wasn’t the only grievance. Users pointed to OpenAI’s existing contracts with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and OpenAI president Greg Brockman’s reported $25 million donation to MAGA Inc. as the final straws. ChatGPT was the first to reach 1 million users in 5 days, until Threads surpassed it in under one hour in 2023.

This feat was a mountain to climb for other big platforms like Facebook which took over 10 months to reach its first million users.

ChatGPT Users In The United States Send 330 Million Daily Messages To The ChatBot

People from the United States send 330 million messages to ChatGPT every day with users from California alone accounting for 60 million messages.

An analysis of ChatGPT usage in California shows that the most common uses are learning and upskilling at 19% and writing and communication at 19%. Students, workers, and small business owners across the state use the chatbot to understand new concepts, get guidance on tasks, and draft emails, reports, and other documents more efficiently.

Other uses include programming, data science, and math at 7%, where users generate or debug code. Additional activities include design and creative ideation at 7%, health, fitness, and self-care at 7%, and translation at 4%, highlighting the wide range of ways people in California use ChatGPT in their daily work and life.

ChatGPT Usage In Education

A survey by the Walton Family Foundation revealed that 51% of teachers had used ChatGPT within two months of its introduction, with 40% using it at least once a week.

The same survey found that 22% of students used ChatGPT weekly or more, and 68% believed it could help them become better students.

Approximately 66% of students worldwide have used ChatGPT for coursework, and 71% of higher-education students used it in its first year. Additionally, 72% of teachers and 63% of students agree that ChatGPT represents a shift in modern education. 

The California State University (CSU) system has launched ChatGPT Edu, a customized AI tool. It is available to over 460,000 students and 63,000 staff across 23 campuses.

A study revealed that 92% of Indian workplaces have integrated ChatGPT into their daily operations, with active usage among office workers increasing from 23.8% in March 2023 to 42.6% in March 2024. Also, 95.5% of Indian companies encourage the use of ChatGPT as a productivity tool.
